John Daly: interview after first round (69)
Made a bad swing on 17th and played a pretty good bunker shot but made bogey. On 18 I caught a flyer in the rough but other than that it was a pretty good day. These are tough closing holes. Made a nice birdie on the 15th but 16th, 17th and 18th are just tough holes if you don’t hit the fairway. If you don’t it’s hard to keep it on the green.
Two consecutive rounds in the 60s? I hit the ball solid. Only made a couple of putts. Missed a short one on 17 and had a lot of good opportunities today but it reached the thing where it is one thing holing me back, and once the putts start going in it’s going to be a whole lot better. Lack of competition does hurt but that last round in Spain meant a lot to me. I played solid and came in here with a bit of confidence. Not tons but some. I am hitting it solid but if you miss the fairway by 5 or 6 fairways you are going to struggle to hit the greens.
The crowds wre great here following Molinari, Alvaro and myself and the crowds were bigger than last year when I played in the Italian Open. A lot more people on this Thursday compared to the first Thursday last year. Alvaro is long, pretty long. I hit it pretty good on eight and he was about 12-15 yards past me!
