Interview to Ramsay |
It’s probably a bitter-sweet feeling at the moment. If you had said I would be top of the leaderboard at the start of the day I would have taken it, but the way I played it was almost like I felt I could have opened a gap between me and the rest of the field. I chipped and missed from six feet at the 17th and rolled through the green on 18. Happy with the way I played. Last week I shot 69 in the first round and that was the highest I felt I could shoot. It’s about the short game. That’s what I spend months practising. It’s an area that is a weakness in my game and it’s something I’ve got to improve. Unfortunately where I come from it’s not conducive weather for that sort of practise. I went to the Golf Club of Georgia and putted on fast greens and chipped out of the thick stuff around the greens.
Doing that just fills you with confidence. At amateur level, the set up is completely different to what we find out here on Tour and I am fortunate I can use that Georgia membership. I have considered basing myself outside Scotland for a few years. I love the country but definitely with regards to late and early season it’s worth considering. Playing in Asia is so different. Australia is a bit like Scotland in the summer but in Malaysia the heat and grain are unbelievable. I think it makes you a better all-round player.
Playing with Woods, Mickelson and Harrington in the past? There is a common factor in all of them. They are lethal with the short game. Not the straightest drivers in the world but they know how to get the ball in the hole. I am shorter and my game is more like that of Luke Donald. The short game is the difference and Mickelson is the best in the world. I played a 9 hole challenge on the Sunday (before Augusta) and his shots were unbelievable. These flop shots are just massive. I was about to start applauding! I think my putting is quite good. We worked hard on that over the last few weeks but there are still certain shots that I need to work on. I still feel there is a way to go and that gives me confidence. I feel there are a few more levels I can go up. I am improving my consistency and giving myself time to adapt to the surroundings. Ian Rae, my coach, is really good with the short game and it’s a matter of practising more out of the fluffy rough to get up and down.
