John Daly – preview interview |
Why did you decide to come back to Italy?
I wanted to play more than just one. I actually committed today to the European Open, so that will be five in a row. Since I joined The European Tour I realise I have to get in 11 events so I felt it would be a good idea to add to the four I am already playing.
The Course? It’s a great golf course. A good test of golf. You have to open the shoulders on some holes. The finishing holes are tough. You have to hit driver at 16, 17 and 18. Those three holes are not that wide and you’ve got to hit a lot of fairways here. The rough is a lot deeper than last week and the greens are a lot smaller. It’s definitely a tougher test.
Good start, good finish last week. Just need all four together? I have been working on the putter all week and trying out a new heavy putter this week. I just don’t follow through enough but this one is so heavy it automatically makes the putter follow through. Hopefully that will help. This is a course you’ve got to hit fairways. The rough is too brutal.
What made you decide to play the European Open? I like to play a few in a row. In the past, I’ve always played a lot of events in a row to get some rhythm going and to play well. So it’s not only to get the number of tournaments up but to get some consistency. The more I play the better I feel I will do.
I like the way I played last week. Friday was a true test of patience and I shot even par when the course was playing five shots harder that afternoon. That pleased me. It would have been real easy to lose it a little bit. It played tough.
The biggest hitter you’ve ever played with? Not a guy on Tour, Bobby Wilson. When I was younger we played a lot of golf and he was the straightest, longest hitter I’ve ever seen. He couldn’t play that well but when he launched it in his day, nobody could have caught him. He was a national long driver guy.
Relief to be playng again? It’s nice. I’m fresh. It really doest feel good to be playing again. I don’t know when I restart in the States. Maybe Memphis. I think the week before that would end the six months ban.
Scottish Open and Open: A good chance. It depends on the John Deere Classic. I might have to play there. I don’t know how I am going to get 15 US events in but I’mgoing to try. I wanted to play Barseback in Sweden because I live that course and I might get into Canada that week. My goal is to get my number here, play good golf, and try to get 15 events in the States. I don’t know how I am going to do it. I don’t know how I am going to get in. Not sure if I can get 15 exemptions, but if not I will come back and play here. I played Turnberry in 1994. I love it. I led after nine!! Then we lost a ball on ten and it went downhill from there. It’s my second favourite Open course after St Andrews.
